Vegan Ice Cream Review
Posted by Nicole
Last weekend was such a blast. Another great thing about the weekend– I got to try vegan ice cream for the first time! My friend Karl, who blogs at “The Crimson Heart,” brought two vegan pints over on Saturday!! FYI: Karl loves creative writing and if you are interested in following along with day-by-day excerpts from his book-to-be, be sure to check his blog out!
Now onto the good stuff…
The contenders:
- So Delicious – Cookies ‘n Cream (made with Coconut Milk)
- Double Rainbow – Mint Chip (made with Soy Milk)
Asked to choose Cookies ‘n Cream or Mint Chip, I would probably select the Cookies ‘n Cream flavor. HOWEVER, the Mint Chip basically stole my heart.
It was creamy and definitely had the texture of some nice, whipped ice cream (kind of like Slow-Churned Dreyer’s). It was higher in sugar and lower in saturated fat and fiber. Apparently, sugar is the key ingredient to making creamy, tasty ice cream ;)
One special thing about the Double Rainbow brand is that they are based out of San Francisco! They have 60 flavors of ice creams, sorbets, soy creams and frozen yogurts, all made with natural ingredients. Also, they claim to be the “first to make ‘White Pistachio’ Ice Cream. No green dye for us!” Pistachio is my favorite flavor of ice cream, so this little fact amazes me.
The Cookies ‘n Cream was good as well. It reminded me of the icy consistency of Arctic Zero– you know the super healthy but way overpriced ice cream that can be found at Whole Foods only? This one was higher in saturated fat and fiber, and much lower than the Mint Chip in terms of sugar.
As for the all-natural Turtle Mountain company that runs the So Delicious line, they are proud to offer coconut milk ice cream, no sugar added frozen desserts, coconut milk beverages and creamer, and coconut milk yogurt. They also offer a few soy based frozen desserts and yogurts.
Overall, I have to say that vegan ice cream = win.
Only downside is the hefty price for a tiny pint. And let’s be honest, a pint lasts maybe two days…
Luckily for me, these pints were a gift :)
Q4U: Have you ever tried vegan ice cream?

I tried vegan ice cream the other day when you offered me a taste of both of these…. let’s go to 275 South Van Ness Avenue, knock on the doors of Double Rainbow, and ask for a TOUR! It doesn’t say they offer them on their website but maybe we’ll get lucky?
Love,
Lauren
I am obsessed with vegan icecream. Especially the SO Delicious brand.
What’s your favorite flavor!? I’m going to go pick up a pint soon and want help choosing which to try next :)
I just cleaned off a pint of Turtle Mountain Mint Chip this week. :) It’s so good and yes, I hate spending 6 dollars on a pint of ice cream, but it’s so worth it for a much needed treat :)
and with the $6 price tag there’s more of an incentive to savor it versus scarf it!
Hi Nicole! Thank you for the delicious review! We’re so glad you enjoyed our Cookies ‘n Cream flavor! Did you know we make Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream and Mint Chocolate Chip Soy Ice Cream, too? Here are some money-saving coupons, in case you’d like to try them: http://bit.ly/gW3Pkk Thanks again!

Hi Nicole
I own The Saturn Café (Santa Cruz & Berkeley), I came across your blog and your review of Vegan ice cream and wanted to see if you have any interest in doing a tasting of a few of our Vegan desserts
(Our house made pies & cupcakes are Vegan and we have a few very fun Vegan Milkshakes)
I am going to share a link to your review on our SC Saturn FB page.
Nice Blog you have!
Hi Ernesto! Thank you for checking out the blog and sharing on your Facebook page. As you can tell from our blog name, my sister and I love desserts and would love the opportunity to try some of Saturn Cafe’s vegan desserts. You can e-mail us further at sugarcoatedsisters @ gmail and hopefully we can work something out. We will be available the weekend of March 9-11, if that would work for you.
Thanks,
Nicole Olerich
