Spelling Bee!
Posted by Lauren
It’s the weekend! :) Tonight and tomorrow I’ll be with my a few of my best girlfriends in San Francisco frolicking about (minus the best-best friend of them all, Nicole). There may or may not be a fun daytime scavenger hunt/pub sweets crawl on the agenda for Saturday!
Before I head up to SF to pick up Kerry, I just want to mention that last night I went to see the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical at a small, local theater. The show was put on by Lymelight Productions, a division of Lymelight Foundation, which raises money to help pay for Lyme treatment.
Way back in 2004, Nicole showed me this video of a character named Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre:
Snowball, you’re such a cutie.
Ever since I watched that, I have wanted to see the musical featuring that braided-pigtails girl! In case you have not heard of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, here’s a short description:
THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.
Come watch six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.
The Lymelight actors were hilarious…. it’s hard to pick my favorite!
The guy with the jorts on the left was my date’s favorite. Maybe because they are twins. And they both have a magic foot.
During intermission, we enjoyed some crunchy cinnamon alphabet cookies. How appropriate!
Speaking of food…
Before the show we went to Menlo Park’s Applewood Pizza Restaurant and ordered their Milano – spinach, portabella mushrooms, goat cheese, roasted pepper, fresh basil.
Best part: the mushrooms! They tasted like wine ;)
Ok, enjoy your weekend!
Do you like musicals? What are some of your favorites? Any you’d love to see? I really want to watch Thoroughly Modern Millie because I love tap dancing. For that reason, 42nd Street is my all-time favorite! (With Wicked in a super close second place.)

The middle school in my school district did that musical last year and it was great! And that pizza looks absolutely DELICIOUS. :)
