Early Halloween Party!
Posted by Lauren
A few days ago my friend Susannah forwarded a Halloween party invite my way. For some reason, this year I just have not been jazzed about Halloween, making plans, or picking out a costume. But really, what can top last year’s Candyland?
I decided to stop by my mom’s house after the Walk to end Alzheimer’s to raid our overflowing costume “box.” After 30+ combined years of dance recitals, dance team performances, and sorority parties, Nicole and I certainly have a lot to choose from!
Exhibit A:
I asked my college roomies for advice and Fran was on a ROLL! I thought I’d include this snapshot for you in case you need ideas:
I eventually picked a sparkly skirt from one of Nicole’s fashion show dances and borrowed a scarf from my mom’s closet and a lace blouse from Nicole’s closet… DIY gypsy costume!
After leaving my mom’s: strength workout >; shower >; Kyle came over >; walked to grocery store >; bought supplies for an impromptu dinner party >; made the best Halloween hummus (recipe soon!) >; prepared stuffed peppers >; put on costume!
Kit, Adrienne, and Sarah joined Kyle and me for dinner & pumpkin beers. Chris and Susannah showed up after dinner to finalize their costumes. Strangely enough, this was the first time anyone besides Nicole/Kyle/Krizia saw my place! And I’ve lived here how long… 3 months?
Speaking of pumpkin beers, my friend Katie had a pumpkin beer sampling shindig and here are their rankings. We tried the 3rd and 8th place finishers – Shipyard’s Pumpkinhead and Uinta’s Punk’n Harvest Ale. Where can I find some Elysian Blight Pumpkin Ales in the Bay Area??
After dinner we caravaned to Sports Page for the aforementioned Halloween party (their Trivia Night has popped up many times on the blog). Kyle dressed up as a runner and Sarah is Donatello from TMNT.
A better look at my gypsy costume…
My pal Katie (the sailor) was there! I haven’t seen her since Megan’s wedding and we promised to plan a hangout soon!
Something happened that made us react like this…. it involved Instagram and one hot mama. You know who you are ;)
Halfway through the night we ventured outside for some volleyball. I love that Sports Page has a sand volleyball court – so legit.
See the guy in hot pink Nike tempo shorts? Such a cutie ;)
Sarah played so well – proud of her for whipping out those 8th grade volleyball skills. After serving a few times, I wimped out (cold sand!) and stood on the sidelines giggling at Kyle’s dance moves when the ball wasn’t in play.
Before late-night Taco Bell we left, the party planner threw a costume contest. Other than the nine Top Gun costumes, everybody dressed up in very unique costumes. My favorite of the night was a couple from There’s Something About Mary – she had the stand-up bangs and he had something dangling from his ear. Too funny.
Question: What are you doing for Halloween and do you still dress up?

Your friend was on a serious roll when it came to thinking up creative costumes! I’m impressed! I used to have the most amazing costume box but after college I figured I’d never need to wear them again so I got rid of the whole box… now of course, I wish I had it! The impromptu party looks like so much fun and your costume was so cute!

You shoulda seen her costume – the Hamburglar from McDonald’s!! One of the best ideas I’ve seen this year!
I was adamant about keeping costumes around, but we should probably throw out some stuff that’s just too old (read: small) lol
