Cognitive Dissonance

Posted by Nicole

Hey there, guess who is running a half marathon this weekend?!

We are!

You know when you are really nervous about something and you try to mentally prepare for the situation?

Cognitive Dissonance: The theory of cognitive dissonance in social psychology proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by altering existing cognitions, adding new ones to create a consistent belief system, or alternatively by reducing the importance of any one of the dissonant elements. A key assumption is that people want their expectations to meet reality, creating a sense of equilibrium. Or something like that… In my case, I have gone beyond just “mentally” telling myself that the half marathon will go smoothly this weekend.

Side note: I’ve been sick this week (really bad cold/congestion), I had a tough midterm on Tuesday, I am starting an internship tomorrow (!!!), and I have to rush back to school for a basketball game immediately after the half marathon. Not to mention all the other activities planned for the next few days: entertaining Lauren, visiting our grandparents, USC football game, and hopefully writing some of my term paper. The half is putting extra stress on my OCD-mind.

To prepare further for the half, I’ve actually been running a lot this week. Knowing that I can get through a few miles makes 13.1 sound less daunting.

Monday: 4 mile run, 1 mile walk. 2 hr dance practice- we did a really good conditioning warmup… 3 min jog, 1 min burpees, 2 min jog, 1 min plank crunches, 2 min sprints, 1 min wall sit, 3 min crunches/bicycles… such a nice way to get the endorphins flowing!

Tuesday: 3 mile run, 30 mins elliptical, core work

Wednesday: 6 mile run (with a water refill break in between), foam rolling

Thursday: 50 mins incline walk – I wore a motivating shirt from the RNR Seattle and my new Brooks PureFlows (I still haven’t really broken them in, which makes me nervous for Sunday)

In other news: My sister arrives tonight!!! I can’t wait to see her. It’s silly that it has taken her 13 weeks to make the trip down to see me.

Enjoy your Thursday… it’s almost the weekendddddddd.

PS- Accordingly to this article on CNET, Instagram posts after the election news shot up to 2.1x the normal upload rate. Pretty cool. I love technology.
