Yesterday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT is heartbreaking, devastating, unfathomable. I first saw tweets, then checked online news to confirm, then followed updates on CNN, then listened to news stories on the radio, then watched the President’s reaction on Hulu. I just can’t get over how horrible all of it is. My heart breaks for the families affected by this tragedy and I hope that some good can come of this – be it through stricter gun control laws or better help for those with mental health problems. When someone you love has a personality disorder (like the shooter allegedly had) such as paranoia, schizophrenia, or depression, it’s difficult to get them the help they need but it’s extremely important that you do. This topic is near and dear to both Nicole and me, and we hope that through the sadness and despair, awareness and change will result. The Newtown community is in our prayers.

Today I’m skipping the San Francisco Santacon craziness to prepare for my Holiday Cookie Swap party on Sunday. It will be a small affair, but I’m extremely excited to decorate my house and bake cookies!
That’s maybe 10% of the supplies I plan on setting up… you should see the other side of the room! As soon as I press ‘post,’ I’m going to begin painting some short glasses with primer and chalkboard paint. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!
I’ll be sure to take photos as I go along so I can share the process with you. Kyle’s coming over later with dinner already prepared in his slow cooker :) He’s got a roast in there with red wine and cream of mushroom I think. Doesn’t that sound goooood? On Thursday he came over and we tried to make soup. Key word: tried. It didn’t taste that great.
I blended kale + greek yogurt + S&P + whole habanero pepper + water (no chicken stock!) and then added steamed acorn squash + sweet potato. The consistency was off and the habanero added way too much heat. That’s what you get when you experiment I guess!
Workout check in…. TBH the Slacktasm continued this week. I didn’t “push myself” at all, but I managed to be active every day!
Tuesday – 3 miles in the morning, Taco Tuesday lunch (had to mention it), and then 3 more miles at night (I spy Tara’s blog).
Wednesday – 3.5 mile run in SF! What a beautiful day!
Thursday - tempo run! 10 minutes at casual 7.1 mph, 25 minutes at 8.0 mph, then 10 minutes at 7.1 mph to finish. WTF Gossip Girl! You can’t just throw Bart Bass off a building!
Friday – one hour leisurely bike ride and some ab work… Finally made it to the gym after a trip to the car wash, my mom’s house (borrowing decorations for the cookie party), the grocery store, and the hardware store (for the chalk board paint).
Saturday – Tina’s circuit workout 5C (see above) 3x through. I ran a mile before each circuit for some extra cardio. Although I liked this circuit workout, I realized that anything with more than 5 moves feels too long and I lose interest. I’ll definitely keep that in mind when I plan my “strength” workouts during ski season.
Tomorrow I’m 100% going to do my scheduled long run. I haven’t done one full-out in the past 3 or so weeks and it’s about time. Plus, it will be a great excuse to eat more cookies! :)
